The ceramic rod is another version of the old "knife steel" that everyone used to have in their kitchen knife block.  Made for touching up a blade without major re-bevelling, the ceramic rod is abrasive enough to tune up the edge of the knife and give it back its razor sharpness.  A few strokes in each direction, and your knife is ready to strop and use again!  An essential addition to your knife sharpening toolbox.
